Twitter Tests Two New Interactive Options, Including Encrypted DMs

Twitter’s reportedly working on two new features which could broaden your interactive options in the app.

The first, as reported by TechCrunch, is encrypted DMs, with a test template of the new option spotted in the back-end code of the Android version by user Jane Manchun Wong.

For those unaware, encryption provides virtually unbreakable codes to protect your messages, so you can communicate without fear of anyone else – including government agencies – reading your correspondence.

Adding more protection to private messages could become an increasingly popular option in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal – incidentally, Facebook also recently published a post which explains why they enable DM encryption in both Messenger and WhatsApp.

Already, more and more people are turning to private messaging apps as opposed to posting all their latest news and announcements to public forums, and that trend’s likely to gain more momentum. As such, the move to add encryption to Twitter DMs could be a smart one, providing another way to use the platform as a real-time connection tool.

Twitter has thus far offered no comment on the possible development – though CEO Jack Dorsey did tweet this, with a link to the TechCrunch post:

Which seems like confirmation within itself.

Another messaging option Twitter is working on is the ability to add GIFs to your quote tweets.

Yet again spotted by Jane Wong, the new option would expand the ways in which you can use the quote retweet option, adding to your creative capacity.

It makes sense, and would definitely add to the Twitter experience – while brands would also be able to use the option to help boost engagement (worth noting, tweets with GIFs generate 6x more engagement than basic text updates).

As noted, there’s no word from Twitter yet as to when, or if, these features will be released, but we’ll keep you updated on any future developments.
